What you can expect:
On this attractive combined tour, we supplement our tour of the Historic Rock Walks with a one-hour walk through the Old Town. Here you will first learn about the most important sights and personalities of Nuremberg as well as the history and development of the city. Its impressive ring of walls is just as much a part of our tour as the imposing Imperial Castle, the towering St. Sebald’s Church, the historic Town Hall and the multifaceted Main Market Square with the Church of Our Lady and the Beautiful Fountain. And of course we also meet Albrecht Dürer, probably the city’s most famous son. He also shows us the way to the underworld. Right next to his monument, we descend into the historic rock corridors beneath Sebald’s old town.
The extensive cellars, which often extend over several storeys, were originally used to produce and store the original Nuremberg red beer. This labyrinth was first mentioned in a document on November 11, 1380, when the city council laid down the obligation to keep cellars. With the introduction of refrigeration machines in the 19th century, they finally lost their importance for beer storage.
However, many citizens found shelter here during the heavy air raids of the Second World War. Nowadays, the cellars are used to store the beer and whisky specialties of the Altstadthof brewery. As the last item on our combined tour of the old town and the rock corridors, you can visit both the brewery and the whisky warehouse right next door.
