Guided tours for school classes

Over the course of many centuries, the citizens of Nuremberg dug vaults and tunnels into the shining red sandstone beneath their city. This is because the conditions there were ideal for maturing and storing beer. The legendary red Nuremberg city beer is particularly worth mentioning in this context. The extensive rock cellar complex was first mentioned in a document in 1380.

The sturdy cellars with their perfectly stacked columns also proved to be a blessing during the Second World War. Large areas were connected and converted into air raid shelters. During the numerous bombing raids, many thousands of Nuremberg residents sought shelter here and survived even the worst inferno that swept over the city on 2 January 1945.

Today, the Altstadthof brewery, which is visited after the cellar tour, once again uses a small part of the labyrinth for maturing and storing speciality beers and beer spirits.

The guided tours for school classes focus on the following topics: The history of the largest cellar complex in southern Germany, water extraction in the Middle Ages, beer production, the geology of the Burgberg and air defence during the Second World War. If required, the topics can be adapted by arrangement.
