Learn more about Nürnberg’s overground and underground: Old Town & Historic Rock-Cut Cellar Maze in one tour

Approx. 2 hours (City tour approx. 60 mins, rock-cut cellars/brewery/distillery approx. 60 mins)

About the Tour:

Stroll through Nuremberg’s Old Town, see the famous landmarks and learn about its history – Tiergärtnertorplatz (evolution of the city, Albrecht Dürer, city wall), Ölberg (Imperial Castle), St. Sebaldus Church (church history, reformation), Old Town Hall (city administration, society in the Middle Ages), Main Market (Church of Our Lady, Beautiful Fountain, Pegnitz, Fleischbrücke, Fleischhaus, Bratwurst).

What is hidden in the castle hill? The extensive labyrinth like rock-cut cellar spreads over several floors and was originally used for the production and storing of the original Nuernberg red beer. Even the first documentary mention of the cellar relates to the storage of beer as recorded in a city council decree dated November 11, 1380. With the introduction of chillers, the cellar lost its significance as a beer storage. In World War II many people found protection during the heavy air raids here. Beer and whiskey specialties made by the house brewery and whiskey distillery, that can be visited after the cellar tour, are still stored underground today.

The tour starts at the Main Market (Hauptmarkt) in front of the Tourist Information Nürnberg.

It is also possible to book this tour for a private group at a fixed price. Find our offer on our booking platform.

Good to Know:

Throughout the whole year the temperature in Nuremberg’s rock-cut cellars is around 8-10°C /47-50°F. We recommend dressing appropriately warm as it might get somewhat chilly during the tour

You should be a good walker if you plan to participate on the rock-cut cellar tour. Please make sure to wear comfortable and sturdy footwear

You will have to take several staircases and steps and walk on uneven surfaces in the cellars. Because of the physical barriers unfortunately the rock-cut cellars are not accessible to those with limited mobility
